Milestones on the Zero Waste Journey

Waste minimisation…

Where is your Council in meeting the goals and targets of the NZ Waste Strategy?
Are you meeting the levels of recycling promised in the Annual Plan?
What changes could your Council make in order to lead the country in waste minimisation?
   We have the measurement !

Milestones on the Zero Waste Journey is a new nationwide benchmarking system, for Councils to measure their waste minimisation progress against other Councils and the NZ Waste Strategy.  71% of New Zealand Local Authorities have passed a resolution to head for Zero Waste. While it is clear that good progress is being made, we need milestone measurement.  The milestones are largely taken from the Waste Strategy.

How to work out your Council’s progress

After your registration, you will be sent a wall chart and a score card. The wall chart has 7 categories with 42 targets as well as 12 wild cards. Go through the wall chart, and if your Council has achieved a target, then mark the given points of the target on to your score card. When you get your total score, then let’s see how well your Council is ranked from the basic Zero Waste 5 to the top Zero Waste Supreme Award!  See further details after the sample wall chart below.

The Rules: How to score
  • To work out your Council’s progress, score all points cumulatively on the score card. It is possible to aggregate points from throughout the chart to achieve your benchmark.  -click here to download the Score Cards (Excel sheet)
  • Where percentages are quoted, these are to be percentage of that year’s waste stream in the category or sub-category. Any other calculation must be notified to the organizer.
  • Wild Cards – points scored from these achievements may also help Councils achieve the next milestone. However, to qualify for milestone ZW1 and ZW Supreme Award, Councils must have scored at least some points in each one of the seven available categories.
  • Verification of the achievement and diversion claims can be claimed by use of Council web-site references, or by provision of the appropriate Council report with relevant passages highlighted. Adjudicators reserve the right to check claims. Zero Waste assists with this work on request.
  • Zero Waste staff available as resource people
  • After the appropriate benchmark is determined, each Council is able to choose whether the result and the Council name is named or just shown as a dot on the graph.
