Who are We?
Zero Waste New Zealand Trust
Zero Waste New Zealand Trust is a charitable organisation and has been in operation for ten years since 1997.
The focus of the Trust is to support the activities of community organisations, councils, businesses, schools and individuals involved in waste minimisation and recycling. It is also committed to integrating Zero Waste design principles and philosophy into the marketplace in order to reduce New Zealand’s waste. Big Changes at Zero Waste NZ TrustSince 1997 the concept of 'Zero Waste' has developed from a philosophical idea in the minds of a few to being an accepted concept now commonly talked about. For the Zero Waste New Zealand Trust however the job is not done; the idea has been sold, but the implementation of Zero Waste is still in its infancy and we have no funding. Therefore, from 2007, the two arms of the Zero Waste organisation will be changing and evolving their roles, with the Zero Waste NZ Trust continuing to operate on a limited basis and the Charitable Company, Zero Waste NZ Ltd, operating as a contractor on a commercial basis while contributing funds back to the Trust. We aim to promote the vision of and assist groups moving towards Zero Waste through a number of core activities:
- Information exchange –through our newsletter, website, reports, conferences
- Networking – through conferences, workshops and hui
- Working with councils, community groups and businesses
- Researching waste reduction technologies from around the world that can be implemented at a local level
- Providing advice – using the knowledge and experience of a wide range of experts, who can help with kerbside collection systems, education programmes, recovered materials manufacturing and many other facets of waste minimisation
- Funding – we had run a grants scheme for individuals and organisations working to provide waste reduction and recycling solutions in their communities. (Currently on hold)
- Advocacy and policy development
- Upskilling individuals through courses run by the Zero Waste Academy. These include operating and managing resource recovery centres and waste minimisation education.
