Waste Smoke Detectors

The National Radiation Laboratory (part of the Ministry of Health) is responsible for regulating radioactive devices in New Zealand.

Their website says:

When my smoke detector fails and I replace it, how do I dispose of the old one?
Put it out in your normal rubbish disposal. Every cubic metre of New Zealand soil, on average, contains naturally occurring radioactive material equivalent to about thirteen smoke detectors. The radioactivity in numerous smoke detectors dispersed in landfill sites is not going to have a significant environmental impact relative to the radioactivity that is there naturally. In fact, the natural radioactivity of domestic rubbish is less than that of soil, and even if every household throws out several smoke detectors per year the average concentration of radioactivity in landfill sites will still be significantly less than in most New Zealand soils.

For more information go to www.nrl.moh.govt.nz, then FAQ’s & Advice > Radiation in home > Smoke Detectors.

Used Oil

The Ministry for the Environment has produced a map showing where they understand publicly accessible used oil collection facilities to be located.  The map is based on information supplied by councils late last year and in January this year, and on details from some council websites.

They are aware that we may still not have full information, and would appreciate amendments or updates.

This version of the map does not show the Auckland Regional Hazmobile, which is the major collector of oil from the public in the Auckland area. Districts covered by the Hazmobile will be shown in the next version.  (Other councils that are using the Hazmobile or equivalent service at least annually may also like to let them know)

Contact Alison Handley if you can help fill in the map at
