Zero Waste: Key Strategies for Councils

It’s one step at a time!

  • Set a target date, for example 2020 - with a review in 2015 to either confirm or re-set the target date.
  • Plan for Success
Establish a waste reduction task force with representatives from Council, community, business etc.
Develop a comprehensive waste minimisation plan.
  • Put the incentives in the right place
Review all waste contracts to ensure that they encourage recycling and discourage wasting.
Put an end to cheap waste disposal by gradually raising landfill charges to reflect the true cost of waste disposal.
  • Develop the Infrastructure for Recycling and Resource Recovery
For example: kerbside collection systems, drop off centres, commercial and industrial recycling systems etc.
Ensure that there is an opportunity for recycling and resource recovery at every waste disposal point (eg transfer stations, streetside litter bins, shopping malls, public events etc.)
  • Engage the Community
Find out what your community is doing and see how you can work together.
Develop an education programme for Council staff, schools and local residents
Develop a PR plan to match your initiatives
Keep communicating results so everyone knows how well they’re doing.
Identify and involve local recyclers, educators and community groups who can help drive the waste minimisation plan.
  • Walk the Talk
Establish recycling systems within all Council operations.
    Develop green procurement guidelines.
