• Representatives of government at national, provincial and local level, civil society and the business community, participating in the first National Waste Summit, adopted a target of Zero Waste by 2022 (September 2001).

• Earthlife Africa developed the Zero Waste programme at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in August 2002. The team concentrated on the Civil Society Global Forum attracting 30,000 delegates.
