The main focus of the strategy is on garbage segregation. Currently 6-7000 tonnes of waste is disposed of to landfill in the capital each year. This figure is projected to rise to 17-20,000 tonnes by 2020. There are three landfills in operation currently but they are filling up fast and on the verge of being closed down. The strategy includes separating dry recyclables and organic waste using a twin box system. Source: The Hindu, June 22 2003
