Governmental

  • 48 (or 66%) of New Zealand Councils have adopted a ’Zero Waste’ policy, most with targets of 2015.

  • The Ministry for the Environment published the National Waste Strategy, ’Towards zero waste and a sustainable New Zealand’, in March 2002. New Zealand is the first country in the world to have a national policy of ’towards Zero Waste’.

Non-Governmental

  • Zero Waste New Zealand Trust was established in 1997 to "encourage and motivate all sectors of New Zealand society to work towards a target of zero waste".
