Xtreme Waste

Since July 2000 Xtreme Waste has managed the entire solid waste stream for the Community of Raglan.

The Incorporated Society operates a fully functional Recycling Centre, including:

• Steel yard

• Timber recovery

• Hazardous chemicals depot

• Green-waste service

• Refuse transfer service 

• Retail recycle shop called Kaahu’s Nest.

As well Xtreme Waste manages a kerbside and business recyclables collection service and two rural recycling depots.

In 2000 Xtreme Waste set the following three-year targets:

• Diversion of waste from landfill by 75%

• Creation of a minimum of 4 sustainable FTE employment positions

• 100% ownership of community waste management by the community

• The above at no extra cost for the community

These targets have been achieved, although by July 2003 their staff had expanded to 23 direct part time positions and 70% of waste has been diverted from landfill,
